Walk into any electronics shop in Chennai and you'll be overwhelmed with camera options — IP, analog, HD, 4K, DVR, NVR, PoE, WiFi. This guide cuts through the noise.
The Simple Breakdown
- Analog cameras — Traditional technology. Uses coaxial cable. Records to a DVR. Cheaper upfront.
- IP cameras — Modern technology. Uses network cable or WiFi. Records to an NVR. Better quality, more features.
Image Quality
This is the clearest difference — IP cameras win decisively. Modern IP cameras offer 2MP, 4MP, and 4K resolution. At night, IP cameras with infrared or colour night vision are noticeably sharper than analog alternatives.
🎯 Real example: An analog camera might show a blurry shape at your gate at night. A 4MP IP camera will clearly show a face, number plate, and clothing colour.
Installation
Analog: Uses coaxial cable (RG59/RG6), which is thicker and requires a separate power cable per camera — more cable management work.
IP (wired): A single Cat6 network cable per camera. With PoE (Power over Ethernet), that same cable also powers the camera. Cleaner, faster installation.
IP (WiFi): No cable to the camera, just power. However, we don't recommend WiFi cameras as a primary security system — they're prone to interference and connectivity issues.
Cost Comparison (Chennai market, 2025)
- Analog HD, 4-camera installed: ₹18,000 – ₹28,000
- IP 2MP, 4-camera installed: ₹24,000 – ₹36,000
- IP 4K, 4-camera installed: ₹35,000 – ₹60,000
Our Recommendation
For new installations in 2025, we recommend IP cameras in almost every case. The price gap has narrowed, and the image quality and feature advantage of IP is too significant to ignore. The only exception: clients with existing analog infrastructure who want to upgrade — in that case, upgrading to HD analog is the most cost-effective route.
🔒 Pro tip: For outdoor security, always use wired cameras (analog or IP). For indoor supplementary monitoring, WiFi cameras are fine.
